Client:
Sixteen years ago, Brian Parker, a five star chef with Marriott Resorts, decided
to open his own restaurant, Scalawags Whitefish & Chips, in Mackinaw City, MI.
In 2003, he opened a second restaurant in Petoskey, MI. It has since become a family
favorite with Great Lakes whitefish as the featured dish and is now a franchise
with 9 locations in the state of Michigan. The restaurant chain has become a favorite
destination for metro Detroit residents as well as tourists. All of the Scalawags
restaurants are decorated with a fishing theme which includes minnow bucket lights
and other antique fishing paraphernalia. Though some Scalawags restaurants are located
in metro areas, the décor gives people the feeling of dining in a fishing lodge
up north.
Objective:
Brian’s sister, Suzy Sherman and her husband Phillip along with Andy Hendricks opened
a Scalawags restaurant in Rochester Hills, MI in March 2007. They wanted to add
a wall mural in the hallway that connects the front and rear of the restaurant.
Suzy began searching for water and lake-related murals online and found the Murals
Your Way website. She was thrilled to learn they could produce a custom wall mural
from an original photograph. She raided her mother’s photo albums and found the
perfect picture of her father on a fishing trip at Whitefish Lake in Ontario, Canada.
Her father had passed away 30 years ago, and she thought it would be a nice homage
to have his picture in the restaurant.
The Process:
Suzy mailed in the original photograph, which was taken in 1963. “Your staff was
very helpful and instructive, and helped me decide what would be the optimal size
of the mural,” said Sherman. The mural of her father was installed on the wall facing
the entrance so it is the first thing that draws your attention when you enter the
restaurant. “It was just like putting up wallpaper. It only took us about a half
hour to mount. The generous overlaps made aligning the three panels quite easy.
The vinyl is sturdy, which aided in mounting the mural, and makes cleaning easier.
When we finished the installation and trimmed the mural with cedar panels, we stood
there smiling. It was like having our father overlooking our venture together.”
The Result:
“Murals Your Way guided me through the process wonderfully, your prices are very
reasonable, the product is of high quality and it was very easy to mount using the
directions included. Murals Your Way is a 15 out of 10!”
