A Storied Style

A Storied Style is a design blog run by Grace Mitchell, where she documents her family’s 1921 home renovation, interior design projects, and inspiration she finds in everyday life. Grace prides herself in creating interiors that evoke a story of the owners – what it says about the people who live there, what makes them interesting, and what they love.

Making a small bathroom work for four little kids plus the occasional guest is no small feat. After moving into their new home, Grace originally planned to renovate the small 1921 bathroom – its original tile, plumbing, and lighting all intact – later down the line. That is until the shower started coming through the living room ceiling! Thus, the bathroom renovation began.

Wanting to stay true to the home’s 1920s era that evoked a modern look, Grace combined a mix of new and salvaged elements for the bathroom’s design. Black and white hex tile, clean subway brick, verdigris and copper accents, and wood elements came together to create a kid-friendly and beautiful space.

The wall next to the door needed a bit of oomph, and Grace decided to transform a photo of her four kids into a custom, full-size wall mural. The wall mural wraps around the corner for a finished look. To protect it from moisture and add longevity, protective topcoat was added to the wall mural. Not only is the wall mural another piece of art for the bathroom, but it’s also a nod to the fact that the bathroom is primarily a kid’s space.

The final result is a win-win; the bathroom has enough charm to suit the kids, but enough sophistication to feel comfortable for guests.
