The internet can’t seem to get enough shibori. I’ll admit, when I first saw it appearing in the textile and fashion blogs… I wasn’t sure what it was called. I just referred to it as that “blue, tie-dye, batik style.” I suppose that isn’t so inaccurate.
In step with the season’s infatuation with indigoes and watercolors, shibori ties trendiness with tradition and craftsmanship. This Japanese dying method has an organic feel (especially when applied to linen and natural fibers), and no two pieces are the same.
It can be as simple or detailed as you like, and since it’s monochrome, it doesn’t get too be too busy or distracting.
The folks over at francois et moi have a great step-by-step on how to dye your own tea towels using just a few simple tools.
As always, thanks for reading!
